Before proceeding to determine the meaning of the term infrared rays, it is necessary that we make known the etymological origin of the two words that shape it:
-Rayo, first of all, derives from Latin. Specifically, it comes from "radius", which can be translated as "rod" or "lightning."
- Infrared, on the other hand, derives from English. In this sense it must be said that it was the American physicist Samuel Pierpont Langley who proceeded to coined the term and did so using two components of Latin: the prefix "infra-", which is synonymous with "under", and the word " russus ”, which means“ red ”.

The line originated at the site where a certain type of energy is generated, which propagates in a certain direction, is called Thunderbolt . Infrared , on the other hand, is an adjective that refers to radiation whose wavelength is greater than red.

Infrared rays, therefore, constitute a kind of electromagnetic radiation with a length of wave which is greater than the wavelength of the light that can be seen (therefore, it has a lower frequency), although less than the wavelength of the microwave (the frequency of infrared rays is higher).

A body that is at a temperature higher than -273.15º Celsius (equivalent to 0 Kelvin ) can emit infrared rays with wavelengths between 0,7 and 1,000 micrometers . According to the wavelength, you can distinguish between near infrared rays , medium infrared rays and far infrared rays .

It is important to keep in mind that all bodies emit an energy radiation, which is linked to the temperature . In the case of living beings, most of the radiation is infrared.

When you talk about the thermal sensation , reference is made to what a person beyond room temperature. This is mainly due to the radiation that comes from the sun's rays: if we receive more energy than we emit in the form of infrared rays, we will feel heat, even when the ambient temperature and body temperature remain constant.

As explained, infrared rays can be used in special devices to see bodies in the darkness , recording the radiation they emit. The greater the amount of infrared rays emitted, the greater the brightness can be captured.

Currently, infrared rays are used very frequently, in various fields and with a wide range of purposes and functions, among which we could highlight the following:
-As an element of what is external heating, especially in premises with terraces, shop windows ...
-To be able to detect water leaks in a much faster way and without having to undertake the breakage of any installation.
-The military also makes use of infrared rays through certain systems when they are carrying out an operation. Thus, by means of these they can, for example, detect a target even in conditions of poor or no visibility.
-To undertake what is the drying of paints, within the field of industry.
-Within the field of gastronomy, to be able to undertake what is roasted of certain dishes in a faster way and getting a more homogeneous result.
