It is known as isotope to the varieties of atoms that have the same atomic number and that, therefore, constitute the same element even if they have a different mass number. Atoms that are isotopes of each other have identical amount of protons in the nucleus and they are in the same place within the periodic table .

The term isotope that concerns us now has to say that it has its etymological origin in Greek and is that it is composed of two parts of that language: isos which can be translated as "equal" and moles which means "place."

Non-stable isotopes undergo a period of disintegration where energy is emitted as beta rays , alpha or gamma .
